Important information about the technology behind Depthline.
Depthline uses artificial intelligence to process raw sonar data into 3D cave maps. While our AI achieves high accuracy rates in testing, AI-generated maps are reconstructions — not direct measurements. They may contain errors, gaps, or inaccuracies, particularly in complex cave geometries, areas with heavy silting, or environments with unusual acoustic properties.
Depthline cave maps are planning and reference tools. They are not certified navigation instruments and should not be treated as the sole source of truth when making diving decisions. Always carry appropriate physical navigation tools (reels, lines, compasses) and follow established cave diving protocols.
Sonar technology has inherent limitations. Factors that can affect data quality include water temperature gradients, suspended particles, biological interference, multipath reflections in narrow passages, and rapid diver movement during scanning. Maps generated from degraded sonar data may be less accurate.
Underwater cave systems are dynamic environments. Conditions can change between dives due to water flow, geological shifts, siltation, biological growth, and seasonal variations. A map generated from one dive may not accurately represent conditions on a subsequent dive.
Depthline's AI-powered hazard detection identifies common risk factors based on sonar data patterns. It does not guarantee detection of all hazards. Unmapped passages, hidden restrictions, flow changes, and other dangers may not appear in the hazard analysis. Always exercise independent judgment and follow your training.
Maps in the Community Cave Atlas are contributed by individual divers. While we review contributions for data integrity, Depthline does not independently verify every community map. Use community maps as a reference alongside your own assessment and local knowledge.
You are solely responsible for your safety while diving. Depthline is a tool to enhance your planning and awareness — it does not replace training, experience, judgment, or proper safety equipment. Never exceed your certification level or training based on information from Depthline maps.
We are continuously improving our AI processing and sonar algorithms. Map accuracy and hazard detection capabilities will improve over time as we collect more data and refine our models. If you notice inaccuracies in a map, please report them through the app or email team@depth-line.com.
